Barbecue Side Dishes Everyone Will Love
There is something about the Fourth of July that has always resonated with me, growing up and now with my grandchildren. The Fourth of July is all about the simple joys—parades, red, white, and blue everything, and barbecue side dishes served on picnic tables under a summer sky. Delicious food and pure fun for everyone with bursts of excitement!
The grill was always going, but it was the side dishes that made the meal: My Mom’s baked beans, my potato salad, and someone always showed up with deviled eggs and watermelon. It wasn’t fancy, but it was unforgettable. This list of Fourth of July barbecue side dishes combines classic favorites with a few updated ideas for today’s table.

Whether you’re hosting the whole family or bringing a dish to share, these are the sides that always disappear first.
Classic Potato Salad with a Tangy Twist
No Fourth of July is complete without potato salad. Our version is creamy and familiar, but I like to add a bit of white wine vinegar and chopped dill pickles for a little zip. Make it the day before and let it chill—it only gets better. This barbecue side dish will make every cookout a success!

Ingredients:
- 3 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and diced
- ¾ cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- ½ cup finely chopped dill pickles
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- ½ small red onion, minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Paprika and parsley for garnish
- 4 hard-cooked eggs -optional
Instructions:
Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender. Drain and let cool slightly. In a large bowl, mix mayo, vinegar, mustard, pickles, celery, and onion. Fold in potatoes. Season with salt and pepper. Chill at least 4 hours or overnight. Garnish with paprika and parsley before serving.
Warm Baked Beans with Bacon and Brown Sugar
This is the dish that makes the picnic table smell like home. Slow-baked beans with plenty of smoky bacon and just enough brown sugar to balance things out. It’s the one dish that gets scraped clean, even when it’s hot out. Must be the bacon!

Ingredients:
- 2 (28 oz) cans baked beans
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard or Grey Poupon
- 1 tablespoon molasses
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 4 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, mix beans, sugar, mustard, molasses, and onion. Pour into a baking dish and top with bacon. Bake uncovered for 45–60 minutes or until bubbly and the bacon is crisp.
Red, White, and Blueberry Fruit Salad
This one is as pretty as it is refreshing. Toss together strawberries, blueberries, and diced apples (or watermelon), and add a squeeze of lime juice and a handful of chopped mint. Serve it chilled in a big, clear, footed glass bowl—it always looks festive.

Ingredients:
- 2 cups strawberries, halved
- 2 cups blueberries
- 2 cups diced apples or seedless watermelon
- Juice of 1 lime
- 1 tablespoon honey (optional)
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint
Instructions:
In a large bowl, combine the fruit. Drizzle with lime juice and honey. Toss gently, then sprinkle with mint. Chill until ready to serve.
Cheesy Corn Casserole from the Oven
Think of creamy corn pudding as a Southern comfort food. You mix corn, cornbread mix, cheese, butter, and sour cream and bake it till golden. It’s warm, rich, and just right with grilled meat.

Ingredients:
- 1 (15 oz) can corn, drained
- 1 (15 oz) can creamed corn
- 1 cup sour cream
- ½ cup (1 stick) melted butter
- 1 box Jiffy corn muffin mix
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Pour into a greased 9×13 dish. Bake for 45–50 minutes, until golden and set in the center. Serve warm.
Simple Deviled Eggs (with or without a kick)
Some people swear by sweet relish, while others prefer it to be smoky or spicy. I keep mine simple for outings: yolks, mayo, a touch of mustard, and a sprinkle of smoked paprika. If you want to take it up a notch, add a dash of hot sauce or a spoonful of horseradish. We have this casserole at every family dinner, my grandson insists!

Ingredients:
- 12 eggs
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Smoked paprika for garnish
- dill sprigs to add color to the top
Instructions:
Boil the eggs, then let them cool and peel. Halve lengthwise and remove yolks. Mash yolks with mayo, mustard, salt, and pepper. Pipe or spoon into whites. Sprinkle with smoked paprika and add the dill sprigs if desired.
Grilled Veggie Skewers with Herb Marinade, Perfect Cookout Side Dishes
This is my go-to side dish as soon as the veggies come in and the grill is set up, or when I want something fresh and warm. Skewer up zucchini, mushrooms, red onion, and cherry tomatoes, brush with olive oil and herbs, and grill just until tender. They’re quick to make and just as delicious at room temp.

Ingredients:
- 1 zucchini, sliced thick
- 1 red onion, chunked
- 1 red, yellow, or orange bell pepper, chunked
- 1 pint of cherry tomatoes
- 8 oz mushrooms, halved
Marinade
- ¼ cup olive oil
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs
- Salt and pepper
Instructions:
Whisk the marinade ingredients. Toss the veggies in the marinade and let them sit for 30 minutes. Thread onto skewers. Grill over medium heat, 8–10 minutes, turning once, until tender and charred.
Old-Fashioned Macaroni Salad
Elbow macaroni, chopped sweet pickles, red pepper, celery, and a mayo dressing that tastes like summer. I always make a double batch—it’s the one everyone “just takes a spoonful of” until the bowl is mysteriously empty. If you have leftovers, wrap and save for 3-5 days in the fridge.

Ingredients:
- 1 lb elbow macaroni
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ½ cup chopped celery
- ½ cup chopped red pepper
- ¼ cup chopped sweet pickles
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: 1 cup cubed cheddar or two chopped hard-boiled eggs
- We often have this salad as a main meal by adding tuna
Instructions:
Cook macaroni, rinse with cold water, and drain. Mix dressing ingredients in a bowl. Add pasta, veggies, and optional ingredients. Stir to coat, then chill for at least 2 hours.
