Benefits of Gardening after Retirement

Benefits of Gardening after retirement

Do you think there are benefits to gardening after retirement? I sure do! It’s the end of the season here in Vermont and the garden is getting ready to be put to sleep for the winter. I have had 4 months of wonderful gardening and an amazing harvest. When we first bought these metal garden beds I had no idea how they would work out. The beds worked out so well that I am already planning on buying a few more for next year’s garden season.

So let’s talk about the benefits that I have found for Gardening after retirement. Here are just a few things I have found.

  • You have more time to explore gardening subjects by reading, taking classes, visiting other gardens, going to seminars, joining garden clubs etc.
  • You have probably gardened already on a small scale so you know what works in your area
  • Excellent exercise and an opportunity to be outdoors which is great for your health!
  • Grandkids are fascinated with gardening and where food comes from
  • You will harvest the best food money can buy!
  • You will hopefully have help (my husband was never able to help me before but now he does the bulk of all the hard gardening chores) You can also pay a teen to help you if you don’t have help at home. So you will be teaching someone else about the benefits of gardening at the same time.
  • You will have food to share making you a great neighbor and you can teach others about the benefits of gardening
  • You can save some of the harvest by storing food for the winter either freezing or canning or drying
  • Exploring new varieties of vegetables that just weren’t readily available years ago
  • Save money and at the same time eat better, it’s a win win
  • You can learn to compost which saves money and provides the best soil amenities

One of the things I do is plant a bed of flowers for cutting and the benefits there are many. Besides being beautiful to see in the garden the flowers are great on my table. Giving a bouquet of flowers along with some veggies to the neighbors is a great community builder. Now on to those metal raised garden beds.

Raised Garden Beds for Gardening After Retirement

I would not have had such a great garden nor would I have been able to keep it up if it weren’t for these beds. I am in therapy for a future knee replacement and kneeling on the ground won’t work for me. These beds allowed me to do something that I love. I wait all winter through the Vermont weather planning the garden, perusing seed catalogs and going to flower shows and area greenhouses waiting for Spring. If I were to sum up what was the most valuable purchase for gardening these would be number 1! You can read about how we set them up here. Gardening After 65 I am leaving my Amazon affiliate link below so you can read about these beds for yourself. Please comment if you have any other benefits for gardening after retirement so I can add them to the list
