DIY Bird Nests: Create Your Own Unique Home Decor
Birds are nature’s architects, crafting intricate nests using the most accessible materials. “I’ve always been fascinated by how birds build their nests—each one a tiny masterpiece of nature. Over the years, I’ve collected several real nests, and each time, I marvel at their intricate construction. Inspired by nature’s tiny architects, I love making my own DIY bird nests, which are perfect for spring decor.”
Let’s Make a Nest
Whether you’re an experienced crafter or just looking for a new project for spring, making DIY bird nests at home is an excellent way to bring a touch of nature’s beauty into your space. Here’s a simple guide to creating your own bird nests using everyday materials. I have been making these nests for years and they last! *It gets messy though! Be sure to watch the video at the end for nest building highlights!

Materials You’ll Need
- Moss or Spanish Moss: This adds a natural element and fills in gaps between the
- Craft Glue: Essential for holding the structure together. I used Elmers School Glue
- Additional Natural Materials: Consider leaves, straw, or petals for added texture and color.
- Optional Decorative Items: Tiny eggs or birds for embellishment.

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Create the glue mixture: Start mixing the craft glue or school glue with water: 2 parts glue one part water
- Nest materials: Tease out the Spanish moss and add it to the glue mixture until everything is covered with glue and you have enough materials to make nests
- Form the nest in your hand or in a mould: I use a tuna can to get the shape and size of my nest.
- Add Texture and color with Reindeer Moss: Reindeer moss comes in a bright green color and will add texture and a spring vibe with that bright green
- Incorporate Other Materials: Use leaves, straw, or other natural materials gathered from outdoors to add interest and a natural look
- Dry the nest: I have used several different ways of drying the nest but putting my little nests on a parchment paper lined tray and baking them at the lowest possible temperature has worked well, you will need to keep turning them over so the glue mixture dries and doesn’t stick to the paper*
- Finishing Touches: Once the nest structure is complete, consider adding decorative elements like small eggs or a crafted bird. These can be glued into the nest for a charming finish.
- Display your nests throughout your Spring decor

Tips for Success with Diy Bird Nests
- Choose Varied Texture: Using a variety of textures and materials will help give your nest a more authentic appearance.
- Experiment with Sizes: Don’t be afraid to vary the size of your nests for different uses—small for table decor or larger for centerpiece displays.
- Keep It Natural: As much as possible, stick to natural colors for a more realistic look.
- *MAKE SURE TO DRY THE NEST THOROUGHLY BEFORE USE Besides the oven I often use a blow dryer to finish the drying process
*As a small business we often use links to share products we use but don’t sell. We earn a small commission on any items you purchase but it doesn’t cost you any more. We will always identify these items and be assured these are items we use in our work too!
I purchased this book several years ago used and it is one of the most beautiful books I have ever owned on natural decorating for Easter. It is a big coffee-table book and it is absolutely gorgeous!
